First Step: Ask yourself the 5W’s

- Who is your target audience?
- What are you going to share?
- Where are you going share?
- When are you going share?
Answering these questions with much detail as possible will help you in a way you will definitely benefit while planning out your strategy.
WHY do you want to be on social media? — are you posting on socail media to promote, to drive traffic to your site or to serve your customers? The very first question is a big one, consider everything about your brand while answering this.
WHO is your target audience?— this is also an important step as to ease the following ones. For example, if your audience loves to read books, you can share posts about books or bookstores. This step gives you an upper hand in finding content. An easy way to embody your target audience is to build a persona. Your persona will be the main consumer of your brand. Think of your personas name, age, job, gender, salary, location and what interests and hobbies do they have etc.
WHAT are you going to share?— this question is not just for content but also for form. Are your posts going to be videos or photos? And what about the content? Will you share photos of your customers using your products or will you be creating new content? An important thing to keep in mind is to set a “theme” for these posts. Be it colours, use of language or content; there must be a theme that will get to your consumers and make you recognisable among other posts.
WHERE are you going to share?— ok, so your posts are ready, but where will you be sharing them? One thing to keep in mind is that your brand doesnt have to be on every single social media platform. Again what you need to look at to decide on the platform is your personna. The next step is to determine where you are going to share your content. In other words, which social media platforms does your brand want to be on? Before we go any further, remember that your brand doesn’t have to be on every social media platforms. We have made that mistake before. Being on fewer platforms gives you a better focus and more time to create better content. Where is your personna the most active? Is is Instagram? Is it Twitter? Posting at fewer platforms gives more focus to your brand.
WHEN are you going share?— before you start research about the best time to post, take a step back and examine your target audience first. What is the daily routine of your persona? Do they work at night and sleep during day? Are they sports fans that check every single post before a match and re-watch the small clips of the match after? Once you have figured this out, your final step is all done!
Now that you have figured all your steps, gather the answers and look! Here you have it, your very own social media marketing strategy!
